Our Preschool at Home Journey

We’re on letter B in our Learn to Read Preschool Alphabet Letter Series.  For our Letter B post from last year, which includes sensory ideas and set-up for an intro to the letter B click here: Letter B. And for my FREE hand-drawn letter B Printables click here: Letter B Printables.

Reading is one of the 12 Sensitive Periods from Montessori

If you have a preschooler who knows their ABCs and who has expressed an interest in reading, this series of posts will be perfect for you.  The worksheets provide 5 pages of examples from my Learn to Read Preschool Alphabet Letter B printable pack that includes 28 different activities for your preschooler.

Activities include things like a “bee” and “button” craft, a lace-up soccer ball, 20 flashcards with pictures using short letter “B” words, sight words, coloring, tracing, do-a-dot, and so much more!  I spent about four hours putting this printable pack together so I think you’ll truly enjoy the printables! Click here to purchase the entire Letter B Printable Pack online.

Reading is one of the 12 Sensitive Periods as outlined in Montessori. It’s one of our key focus areas in our at home preschool.

This post on our Learn to Read Preschool Alphabet Letter B is our second letter into “reading” territory.  If you would like to assess your preschooler’s readiness in the area of reading, I have a free chart in my post, Advancing Preschool Reading Behaviors.

I spent some time on Pinterest looking for things that might be good for our letter B activities this week.  I pinned everything that looked interesting.  My goal is to create a board for each letter of the alphabet. Follow me on Pinterest if you want to get copied on all the resources and ideas that I discover via Pinterest.

This week we started our letter B study with a craft.  The artwork is included in the downloadable package and I just used a few art supplies that we already had on hand to decorate.  We used pipe cleaners for the antenna, glitter glue for the sparkle and google eyes for the eyes.

The “bee” craft is super easy.  You just print out the bee onto yellow construction paper and cut out the body and wings.  Have the child glue the body and wings to a piece of paper and decorate.  Here you can see my 20-month old got in on our craft.  Mr. Bee suffered a slight injury when my son tore the construction paper – but it was easy to fix with a little glue. 🙂

A heavy emphasis is being placed on reading in our preschool at home efforts this fall.  So I checked at our local library and they have some wonderful books for preschoolers and they color code the books based upon the level of reading required to read the book.

Letter B Books to Increase Preschool Vocabulary

If you’re looking for books for an emergent reader you may want to try:

  • Biscuit (My First I Can Read)
by Capucilli and Schories – Biscuit is a yellow puppy who would rather play than go to bed. Will Biscuit ever go to sleep?
  • Boats (Step-Into-Reading, Step 1)
by Corey and Reed – A delightful book about all kinds of boats.
  • In My Backyard (Rookie Ready to Learn)
by Curry and Brown – My boys love the outdoors and our backyard so this story kept their attention.
  • Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?
by Carle – A children’s classic.  See my FREE Printables to create your very own Brown Bear Book Box at home.
  • Belly Button Book
by Boynton – A fun and lighthearted look at belly buttons through the eyes of a hippopotamus.

In my downloadable printables you’ll find flashcards for 20 words with pictures as well as sight words for your preschooler.  Click here to purchase the entire Letter B Printable Pack online. For information about what sight words are appropriate for pre-K, kindergarten and up through grade 3, please see my post, sight words.

Start your Day with the Preschool Circle Time Morning Board

We start our preschool day with our preschool Morning Board. It’s a great way to teach preschoolers basic skills like telling time, matching shapes, reading a calender, and monitoring the weather. For a complete list of our morning board printables click here: Morning Board.

Teach Character in your at home Preschool

To supplement our letter B activities for the week, I also use God’s Little Explorers.  Our letter B coincides with week 17 in GLE.  In God’s Little Explorer’s the bible story for the week of letter B study is the story of Jesus calming the storm; from Matthew chapter 14.  My favorite activity (used to emphasize the story) is one where you make boats out of aluminum foil and place them in the bathtub.  Test different shapes to see which floats best.  Try adding objects to the boats to see which sinks last. Stacie has some wonderful ideas. Click here to learn more about God’s Little Explorers.
