Easy Recipe: Southern Pecan Pie

November 25, 2017

I’m calling this Southern Pecan Pie because it’s inspired by the south.

Southern Pecan Pie Recipe

You see, my Dad lives in Houston, Texas. And there are these grand old Pecan Trees lining a stream near his home. You’d have to see it to believe the beautiful canopy of trees. There are benches to sit at, sidewalks to walk along and loads and loads of pecans. You can take your kids and let them find pecans in the grass. It’s beautiful and peaceful. If I lived in the area, I’d walk this path every day.

Pecan grove in Houston Texas
This is the backdrop that inspired this Pie. This Southern Pecan Pie recipe. The boys and I had been out picking up pecans and my dad and husband asked me – how about a Pecan Pie?

It’s moist, and yet, the nuts make it crunchy. I even added a touch of shredded pumpkin for fun (but that step is totally optional).

Now, I would not try to pick and shell your own pecans. It would take hours. But, buy the freshest pecans you can find. It helps if there is a farmer’s market nearby. Oh, and you are in Texas or someplace like Alabama or Georgia.

The Perfect Gear for Baking

These are great tools for making and serving this Southern Pecan Pie. You can use all of these items over and over again to make all sorts of pies and even quiche. One Piece Silicon Spatulas – Nobody likes the gunk that gets stuck inside the handle. These one-piece silicone spatulas are perfect for stirring up pie ingredients and cooking on non-stick cookware.

Rose Levy Beranbaum’s Perfect Pie Plate – I loved the scalloped edges of this pie plate. It’s beautiful while also being functional. This pie plate is very similar to the one I use in our home.

Steel Pie Server – Just like ingredients, materials for baking and cook wear really do matter! This stainless steel pie server is virtually indestructible and makes for a clean cut and easy serve for pies.

Amazon has loads of tools and display trays for holiday baking and entertaining. I hope you’ll explore their selection online and find the perfect kitchen gear for your next event. Happy Holidays!

Now on to the pie that will impress every guest at your table.

Easy Recipe: Southern Pecan Pie Ingredients

Now I’ll admit, there is one tiny secret to a successful pecan pie. Want to know what it is? Fresh Pecans. For this little pie-making effort I threw in a bit of shredded pumpkin. I was just experimenting with flavor. It does not impact the taste much, so I say – it’s optional (you can leave it out).

Ingredients for Southern Pecan Pie

  • 1 Pastry Pie Shell – get a deep dish variety (frozen is fine)
  • 3/4 cup Light OR Dark Corn Syrup
  • 3 eggs with yolks
  • 1 1/4 cups light brown sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 stick of unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • 2 cups pecans – chopped or halved
  • 1/2 teaspoon grated pumpkin (optional)

  2. Place the pie crust into the pie tin or pan. Pour pecans into pie crust.
  3. Melt the butter. Then, mix corn syrup, eggs, sugar, butter and vanilla into the melted butter using a spoon or silicone spatula. Add the 1 Tablespoon of shredded pumpkin if desired. Stir to combine thoroughly. Pour filling over pie crust with pecans.

There is not as good as Southern Pecan Pie - this pie is moist but retains that nutty crunch and sweet Pecan Pie flavor. Now I'll admit, there is one tiny secret to a successful pecan pie. Want to know what it is? Fresh Pecans. You can find these at the farmer's market or the local supermarket.
