Dear Compassion Sponsor

September 28, 2012

Thank you for sponsoring me.  Your sponsor gift has helped my family.  My grandmother took me to buy shoes and clothes, oil, rice, beans, fruits and vegetables and pots and pans to cook with.  She also let me get a stuffed teddy bear who goes everywhere with me.  My teacher Carmen at the project let us paint pictures of our favorite things and I painted my teddy bear and you.  Please pray for my father he is very sick.  He can not work.  My mother has left to look for work while my grandmother takes care of us.  Every day we go to the project.  I make many friends there.  We play ball and eat tortillas with cheese.  I think about the time you came to visit on your sponsor trip and I hope you can come again soon.  I like to play with you.  I pray for you every day and pray you are happy. God loves you.

Maria

This blog post is written on behalf of our sponsored Compassion child in Nicaragua.  The name is fictitious but the circumstances and style of writing are very similar to the sponsor letters we have received.  The excerpt at the bottom of this blog post is from Wikipedia and provides a concise description of the poverty in Nicaragua.  You can make a difference in a child’s life. It doesn’t cost that much, is easy to do, and is tax-deductible. Sponsor a child through Compassion.  Click this link to: Sponsor a Child

Poverty

Nicaragua, the poorest country in Central America and the second poorest in the Hemisphere, has widespread underemployment and poverty. The US-Central America Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA) has been in effect since April 2006 and has expanded export opportunities for many agricultural and manufactured goods… In early 2004, Nicaragua secured some $4.5 billion in foreign debt reduction under the Heavily Indebted Poor Countries (HIPC) initiative. Managua still struggles with a high public debt burden, however, it succeeded in reducing that burden substantially in 2011. The economy grew at a rate of about 4% in 2011.[3]
Nicaragua is among the poorest countries in the Americas.[125][126][127] Nicaragua’s nominal GDP stands at 6.554 for 2009 and increasing to 8.532 by 2014.[citation needed]Nicaragua’s GDP (PPP) 16.709 billion and the GDP per capita is $1,028 for Nicaragua.[citation needed]
According to the United Nations Development Programme, 48% of the population in Nicaragua live below the poverty line,[128] 79.9% of the population live with less than $2 per day,[129] unemployment is 3.9%, and another 46.5% are underemployed (2008 est.). As in many other developing countries, a large segment of the economically poor in Nicaragua are women. In addition, a relatively high proportion of Nicaragua’s homes have a woman as head of household: 39% of urban homes and 28% of rural homes. According to UN figures, 80% of the indigenous people (who make up 5% of the population) live on less than $1 per day.[130] According to the FAO, 27% of all Nicaraguans are suffering from undernourishment; the highest percentage in Central America.
In His Grip,
Monica
