A Tropical “Island” for your Hawaiian Luau
Here I’ll walk you through how I prepared for and created a little Hawaiian Luau for our family and a few guests. This article includes tips on how to set up your Hawaiian Luau party to look similar to the one below. Plus, all of the printables and decorations are included here for FREE.
Fresh Fruit for the perfect Hawaiian Luau
The tropical islands of Hawaii are unbelievably beautiful with rich, dense vegetation and gorgeous waterways. When you plate the food for a Hawaiian Luau, make sure to use a backdrop of lush vegetation on the plate. I’ve included rich and nutrient dense fruits in the recipes I’m sharing here. Grapes, oranges, and pineapple are perfect for a Hawaiian Luau.

Plan a Hawaiian Luau Party Tutorial
You don’t have to plan a big party to enjoy the fresh tropical flavors of this easy Hawaii-inspired dish. Our breakfast table seats between four and six people, and enjoying a movie and a meal together was more than enough reason to celebrate.
Step 1: Cut and assemble decorations first. For our Hawaiian Luau, I knew the food would not take long to cook. So I focused on party decorations first. I cut and trimmed out all the table scatter, banner, cup labels, invitations, and party activities and laid everything out on the kitchen island. Once I taped together the banner and built the stand up hula girl and boy, I hung the banner in the window and placed the cut-outs on the breakfast table.
Step 2: Clean and declutter. To start, I always clear any clutter from the kitchen and breakfast area. Toys and grocery items left out from the day before go back to their homes in my kids’ bedrooms and the pantry.
Step 3: Gather supplies and start decorating. I picked up the tablecloth, colorful napkins, and plasticware Walmart. I found the other party decor online. I laid out the tablecloth on the breakfast table, and attached the grass skirt with straight pins. Everything else surrounded the skirted table.
Step 4: Assemble the Fruit Tray. I love the layered look of greenery followed by fresh fruit. The spinach leaves are topped with green and red gapes, and oranges. The fake flowers offer a Hawaiian look.
Step 5: Cook the Shrimp. I picked up some frozen shrimp and canned chunks of pineapple at Walmart. Keep reading for my Pan Grilled Shrimp and Pineapple Recipe.
Hawaiian Luau Pan Grilled Shrimp and Pineapple Recipe
Preparing a Hawaiian Luau Pan Grilled Shrimp and Pineapple Recipe is easy. Just wash, defrost, and pat your previously frozen shrimp dry. Our shrimp came peeled and devined with the tail on. Turn your grill up to medium heat and melt 1 -2 tablespoons of butter. Pan grill the shrimp in a few teaspoons of pineapple juice and sprinkle on some garlic salt. It will only take five minutes on both sides. If desired, you can add a bit of spray oil to the veggies for a crispier grill result.
Ingredients for Pan Grilled Shrimp and Pineapple
- 20-25 Frozen Shrimp
- 2 Tablespoons of Butter
- 1 Teaspoon Garlic Salt
- 1 Can of Pineapple Chunks with 2 Tablespoons of Pineapple juice
