Beauty – Encouraging Moms

I truly enjoy writing this one word devotional series.  My hope is that these devotionals would be encouraging to moms.

With this series I’m journeying through the alphabet and we’re on the letter “B” and our word for the week is “Beauty.”

I love this definition from Merriam Webster:

BEAUTY

1: the quality or aggregate of qualities in a person or thing that gives pleasure to the senses or pleasurably exalts the mind or spirit : loveliness
2: a beautiful person or thing; especially : a beautiful woman
3: a particularly graceful, ornamental, or excellent quality

Gives pleasure to the senses…
I remember reading the story of Helen Keller when I was a teen girl.  Helen Keller was both blind and deaf.  Her journey from an untame, incommunicable child to a mature adult of incredible perception is a story worth reading.  I love what a woman who lacked two of the five senses has to say about beauty.
“The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched — they must be felt with the heart,” Hellen Keller.
Helen Keller could touch, taste, and smell, but what she describes about beauty reveals much about it’s truest meaning – it can only be felt with the heart.

Peter writes about what God finds beautiful and it is very different from the way our culture defines it.

1 Peter 3:3-4, New International Version (NIV)

3 Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes. 4 Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight.

Reading this scripture in combination with Heller Keller’s definition of beauty helps me to understand that what God really wants is for our gentle and quiet spirit to touch his heart.

I want beauty that touches God’s heart.

This week I’m praying to have God’s beauty revealed to me.  And I pray too that your week is blessed with abundant beauty.
